In the aftermath of his performance at a show in the Cayman Islands where a woman attempted to plant a panty on Dexta Daps’ head, Irie FM disc jockey, DJ Amber, has implored the star to stop allowing random women onstage with him at stage shows.
Amber, seemingly rattled by the conduct of the woman, made her stance known in an Instagram live, as well as in responding to a question posed by Zip FM as to whether based on the underwear incident, Dexta Daps should stop inviting females on stage. According to the broadcaster, Dexta should be able to recognise by now, that he is being victimized by some of the very women he is attempting to entertain.
“Dexta Daps, stop call up di random crosses dem and stop touch dem! Next ting you go hear dem a sud u fi wine up pon dem when a dem wa wine up pon u. It’s time bruh,” she noted in response to the Zip question.
“My God what type of woman who wants to do that??? I’m so over these girls and Dexta Daps should be too! Bruh avoid these females when you go to work! Dem a wicked and you’re being victimized! Stop allowing anyone to touch you! Periodt! Cause dis nuh bode well fi dancehall…,” she added.
She also took to Instagram to share a video that she said was dedicated to the No Underwear artist, reaffirming that he ought to be rather careful and perhaps hire dancers whom he knows to dance with him at the shows. She said this is because, among other things, there are also risks of transvestites tricking him into gyrating on them, which would not be good for Dancehall.
“Dexta Daps this live is for you. Stop mek the wicked people dem taint you ting. Run dem weh now bruh,” she captioned the post.
On the weekend, during a performance in the Cayman Islands, a woman scrambled onstage, tapped him on the shoulder, and then tried to plant a yellow panty on the Vent artist’s head. Recognizing what was about to happen, the former Manning Cup footballer shifted to the side and used his arm to deflect the advancing woman.
A quick-thinking Dexta, after the woman was ushered offstage, seemingly in a bid to diffuse the situation, turned back to his audience moments later, declaring:
“She good man, she good. She did think it was her boyfriend man she good, Jah Jah,” before launching into lines from his hit song Call Me If, declaring forcefully that the woman “wants an Real Gangalee”, as he danced in front of his doting fans.
The Cayman incident though, was not the first time panties have been thrown at the Calabar High School old boy.
In July 2019, in Antigua, in the midst of a performance of his No Underwear hit song, a huge purple panty was hurled onto the stage, missing his head by inches before falling to the ground.
In the aftermath of that incident, some female had predicted that hurling underwear at the artist would now become a major activity at his shows, similar to the experience of American R&B artists such as Prince and Teddy Prendergrass in the 1970s.
There were also others who thought the panty incident was a ploy designed by detractors to embarrass the Seaview Gardens native.
Veteran selector Tony Matterhorn, was among the members of the entertainment fraternity, who pointed out that the practice of panty-throwing could quickly become commonplace as female patrons become more liberated at Dexta’s shows.
He also said that Dexta was seen as a sex symbol, a title that can come with some negatives.
“When you’re a sex symbol, sometimes it come back come haunt yuh. Chu him go sing di ‘no panty’ song, da one panty deh now, a go make every weh him go, gyal a go just start fling baay drawers… When you sing certain songs, it open the door for a lot of things, thing yuh can’t control more while,” Matterhorn had told The Star back then.
Tuck In Yuh Belly artist Esco had also recommended that Dexta finds a way to set some boundaries before it’s too late, despite the fact that some of the incidences may be out of his control.
“At the end of the day, I imagine he (Dexta) must have mixed feelings because a random woman just throw her panties on stage. There’s a danger to that because yuh nuh know wah inna da panty deh… Ultimately, when male artistes a perform, women will react in all kinda ways. I don’t know if he wanted that kind of attention, so smartly, I think boundaries affi set. You may like it, but a nuh everything yuh like necessarily good fi yuh,” Esco had explained.
